About
Dr. Cecil joined the criminology faculty at USFSP in 2002 and is currently serving as the program’s coordinator. She offers courses on criminological theory, the correctional system, media and crime, and gender and crime. Dr. Cecil’s primary research is on media depictions of crime and criminals, with a focus on how prisons are portrayed in the media and popular culture. Prison Life in Popular Culture: From The Big House to Orange is the New Black (2015) is the culmination of her work on this topic. This book explores how prisons are depicted in films, television shows, and other aspects of popular culture. Her work has also been published in The Howard Journal of Criminal Justice, Feminist Criminology, The Journal of Criminal Justice and The Journal of Criminal Justice and Popular Culture.
