An experienced journalist and dedicated teacher, Bob Dardenne was beloved by his students and colleagues and admired by all who knew him. He was an associate professor who helped create the USF St. Petersburg Department of Journalism & Media Studies. During his twenty-two years at USF St. Petersburg, he twice served as interim department chair, and once as an interim regional associate vice chancellor for research and graduate studies. He spent the 1999-2000 academic year on a Fulbright fellowship at Shanghai International Studies University.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., Dr. Dardenne joined USF St. Petersburg in 1991 after seven years at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Before his academic career, Dr. Dardenne worked for newspapers in Louisiana, New York, Washington D.C., and Mexico City. Dr. Dardenne taught media theory and narrative journalism. He was co-author of The Conversation of Journalism and author of numerous articles and book chapters in journalism history and media effects. He started the USFSP chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha, the journalism honor society, and presided over the first induction ceremony in 2012.

In 2013, the Robert Dardenne Memorial Fund was founded in his honor.
