Abstract
This session organizes panelist and audience response around a single work of arts-based educational research: professional videos of the research informed performance, “Chicago Butoh: The Studio@620 Performance” The script to “Chicago Butoh” is constructed from verbatim transcripts of interviews with a first year teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. During the show, the focus of the audience’s attention is not on the teacher telling stories, but Jai Shanae’s performance of individual students the teacher narrates. Videos of “Chicago Butoh” are critiqued during the symposium from two perspectives on assessment in arts-based research. The session is designed to give the audience tools to evaluate the publically informed, multimodal narratives envisioned by the 2019 AERA Theme. Opportunities for audience interaction are structured across the session.
