Cultural responsiveness, tolerance, and the Alaska library community.

Abstract

The challenges to preserve diversity in a context of cultural responsiveness were the focus of a spirited panel discussion at the 2002 Alaska Library Association conference in Anchorage on March 8. The panel had three aspects: the overall demographics of the residents of Alaska and their work for tolerance presented by Anjana Roy; the "Culturally Responsive Guidelines for Public Libraries," developed by Alaska's public library directors, presented by David Ongley; and reflections on these efforts by Alaska's library community presented by Kathleen de la Peña McCook. The audience was a group of engaged librarians who expressed positive values regarding diversity and sought to share ideas about preserving Alaska's complex legacies.
