Abstract
As librarians enhance their commitment to the ideals of multicultural service and their recognition of the rich diversity of U.S. society, the single largest obstacle to realizing this commitment is the profession's failure to recruit and retain a diversified work force. The library literature offers countless studies and analyses demonstrating that the work force of the information professions is overwhelmingly white, although ethnic minorities will comprise a third of the population by the year 2000. No matter how dedicated and committed the majority may be to the service ideal, there is general acceptance that serving a diverse clientele effectively requires a diversified staff.
