Abstract

<p> The concept of eddy viscosity is generalized to include an ‘‘eddy β&hyphen;term’’ that accounts for the effect of unresolved turbulence and Rossby waves on the resolved modes in the subgrid&hyphen;scale representation of β&hyphen;plane turbulence.</p>
