Abstract

This paper summarizes the results of the project to study the Pinellas County U.S. 19 Corridor's pedestrian safety issues funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7. The corridor's crash history and infrastructure were reviewed in detail and recommendations were made to reduce crashes involving pedestrians along the corridor. Countermeasure recommendations included innovative approaches to pedestrian safety based on a comprehensive review of recent national and international studies. The countermeasure included engineering, enforcement, and human behavior modification tactics. It is expected that countermeasures identified for problem corridors along Pinellas U.S.19 shall be applicable along the remainder of U.S.19 and/or other similar principal arterials in other regions.
