Abstract

While there are many definitions of public health, key components include a community focus, a concern about disease prevention, and a commitment to health promotion. One of the most familiar definitions was first articulated in 1920 by C. E. A. Winslow, and was rearticulated by the Institute of Medicine in 1988: “The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health and efficiency through organized community effort.” (p. 29). This approach works well for those seeking to apply public health activities to pharmacy settings.
