Abstract

Although the term “refugee” has a specific legal definition, it is widely misunderstood and misused in popular vernacular. In recent years (2015–2017), it has been coupled with the concept of terrorism, leading many resident citizens to fear and despise the idea of refugee resettlement in their countries. This entry discusses problematic definitions as well as statistics that dispute the popular conceptions of refugees. Additionally, it looks at ways in which media depict refugees as well as ways in which refugees depict themselves.
