Abstract
Many major universities and colleges have campus-wide Common Read programs, but how does a small university get one off the ground with limited personnel, no guaranteed budget line, and no established tradition for first-year experiences of this nature? Led by librarians with a dream, stakeholders at University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee formed an active committee which set out to create a common read experience from scratch. Since formation, the USFSM Common Read Committee has found success through leveraging partnerships, creative use of resources, and plenty of trial and error. These efforts have ultimately contributed to student success, community engagement, and valuable shared campus experiences. This poster will show the steps followed from idea to implementation, highlighting improvements made each year and plans in place to continue developing this successful program in the future. Attendees to the poster session will leave with ideas on how to get their own common read programs started.
