Abstract

The Gerontology Alcohol Project (GAP) investigated case-finding and treatment of later-life onset alcohol abusers. Extensive assessment was conducted and a self-management treatment approach was developed. Results indicated that (1) later-life onset abusers exist in numbers sufficient to warrant treatment programs specific to their age-related needs, (2) GAP'S self-management approach resulted in marked success for those completing the treatment program, and (3) early attention to variables associated with treatment completion versus dropping out is needed.
