Abstract
Eleanor H. Porter's eponymous Pollyanna is often called a prophet of sorts for the glad game. However, Pollyanna's religiosity goes beyond the glad game to interrogate the turn-of-the-century, Christian-based social gospel and missionary movement. Pollyanna's position argues that doing good for those in our own backyard (the social gospel) is more important than helping those in foreign countries (missionary movement), commenting on real-life strife in the American Christian churches.
